Description

The Knockdhu Distillery is situated in the picturesque village of Knock in Aberdeenshire. Which is up in the in the north east corner of Scotland. The story of the Knockdhu distillery starts with a man of vision (who also had an eye for a good investment). In 1892 an enterprising chap named John Morrison bought the Knock estate. The surrounding land was full of peat and barley. And the Great North Railway line ran nearby. So when springs of pure, clear water were found, John saw a golden opportunity. Samples of the water were sent for analysis and soon negotiations were under way with The Distillers Company of Edinburgh to build a distillery. Knockdhu opened its doors in October 1894. Back then it was regarded as the perfect embodiment of a modern distillery. So it’s perhaps no surprise that they still produce a light, intriguing and thoroughly modern whisky to this day.

AnCnoc 22yr is a truly spectacular single malt and has a lot going for it. First of all it is not chill-filtered and is of natural color, as stated very clearly on the bottle, and it’s bottled at a respectable 46% alc/vol or 92 proof. What we also like is that it comes in a simple tube so you don’t have to pay for the fancy packaging, like with some other brands. And most importantly, this malt is not over marketed and over promoted, unlike some of its competitors, which offers the consumer much, much greater value for their money.

NOSE: Sweet and spicy with notes of honey and toffee. Warm Christmas cake is accentuated by the freshness of lemons, green apples and cut flowers. All wrapped in a delicate whiff of wood smoke.

PALATE: Full bodied and complex. Distinct crushed cloves, raisin and blood orange flavors are at the front, closely followed by layers of fragrant vanilla and leather.

FINISH: Long, rich, smoky and spicy.
