Clynelish distillery was built in 1968 right next to the original Clynelish distillery (which was later renamed Brora) to produce a light highland single malt, since the original Clynelish (Brora) was producing heavily peated whisky for blending because of the shortage of Islay peated whisky, until it was mothballed in 1983. Clynelish distillery is currently owned by Diageo, and the majority of the produced spirit is used for blending in the Johnnie Walker blends.
Clynelish 14yr is an outstanding single malt whisky, and has developed a cult following among its fans, who tend to think that they have a much more sophisticated taste than any other scotch drinkers. And we should give them credit, at 14 years of age Clynelish works perfectly, just like Dalwhinie works at 15 years and Cragganmore works at 12. There are also several independent bottlings of Clynelish, but you have to very careful as the younger versions are not very consistent in quality!
