Description

The origins of Mad River Distillers trace back to a dinner Maura and John had in 2011 when the idea of planting a vineyard turned into considering apple brandy due to Vermont’s climate. Intrigued by Calvados, John, a long-time fan, joined in, and with Brett’s shared appreciation, the concept of starting a distillery at Cold Springs Farm emerged. Alex then renovated an old horse barn into a modern craft distillery and became the General Manager. After renovations, permits, and firing up their still, Mad River Rum was produced in May 2013, followed by various craft spirits, including their flagship apple brandy, Malvados.

In 1799, George Washington’s estate was the largest whiskey producer in the US, but rye’s popularity waned over time. Recent years have seen a rye revival, and Mad River Distillers takes it further by carefully distilling local and organic rye to bring out nuances like earthiness, pepperiness, walnut, berry, and tropical spice notes, using distinct rye varietals, including chocolate rye for cocoa richness. With a “grain to glass” approach, they mill rye, ferment on grain, distill, and barrel in American charred oak, resulting in a versatile rye perfect for cocktails or neat enjoyment, all made in Vermont.
