McCarthys Oregon Single Malt Whiskey comes from the Clear Creak Distillery, Portland, Oregon. Steve McCarthy, the owner and distiller, is one of the pioneers of craft distilling, he’s been making artisan spirits long before it became trendy. This whiskey is distilled from heavily peated barley, imported from Port Ellen, Scotland (the same barley is used for the majority of big bruiser Isla single malts). It is then aged in first fill, and refill Oregon white oak barrels for the total of 3 years. Bottled in September 2013. Super cool, super smoky, super small batch, super allocated. 96 points from the Whiskey Bible, best small batch whiskey in the world. Bottled at 42.5% alc/vol, non chill-filtered, no artificial color.
NOSE: A blast of peat smoke, campfire ash, raisins, dried fruit, a touch of sweetness (think young Caol Ila).
PALATE: Very well integrated and balanced, cured meat, barley sugar, rice pudding, peat emerging on the mid palate.
FINISH: Long, peat smoke, oak, piny notes, tar.
