Description

Tomić’s Plavac Mali Barrique 2011 is a superb red dry wine hailing from Croatia’s Dalmatian Coast. This exclusive wine is crafted from the Plavac Mali grape variety, reserved for years and produced in limited quantities. Reflecting the essence of its terroir, the wine is a result of the natural influences present in the vineyard.

Grapes for this wine are meticulously selected from prime vineyards on the southern side of Hvar Island, where the dry, rocky limestone soil imparts unique characteristics. The challenging conditions of steep and sunny slopes, particularly in locations like Ivan Dolac, Sv. Nedjelja, and Jagodna, necessitate an organic approach. Manual labor, minimal intervention, and small yields (ranging from 0.5 to a maximum of 1 kg) ensure the highest quality grapes.

The Plavac Mali wine reveals the natural intensity of varietal aromas, including dark and ripe fruit such as sour cherry and plum, intertwined with Mediterranean herbs and minerality. Aged for 12 months in a blend of new and used French barrique barrels, the wine gains additional nuances of wood, leather, game, tobacco, and spices. Notably, this Plavac Mali exudes a “French” type of elegance, preserving both classic Plavac Mali aromas and the style of Old Continent wines. Emphasizing structure, complexity, and a prolonged flavor experience.

Best enjoyed at 18-20 °C, this wine is an excellent companion to spicier dishes, roasted meats, and Dalmatian specialties like brudet and pašticada. The ruby-red Plavac Mali Barrique 2011 offers a sensory experience with vanilla, plum, black fruit, and burnt oak aromas. The taste is ripe, full, smooth, and noble, showcasing the wine’s one-year aging in barrique using the classic method without preservatives. It pairs exceptionally well with grilled steak, pasties, and other dishes boasting a fuller flavor profile.
