Port Ellen was a distillery located in a town of Port Ellen on the island of Islay, it was established in 1825 ans closed down in 1983. Since then it has achieved a cult following among scotch lovers all over the world, so much so that each small release from the dwindling stocks that remain sells out faster than the last. Currently the distillery houses a malting plant that supplies Islay distilleries with peated barley.
Port Ellen 35yr is a 14th limited edition release. It was distilled in 1978, matured in refill American and European oak casks for 35 years, and bottled in 2014 at natural cask strength of 56.6% alc/vol. Very limited release of 2,964 bottles.
NOSE: Fresh, complex, green fruit, mossy peat, creamy, nutty, leather, salty.
PALATE: Rich, peat and wood smoke, dark fruit jam, cocoa, old leather.
FINISH: Long, drying, allspice, cocoa.
