Description

To construct a great city, one starts with the toughest known foundation, a principle exemplified by New York City through its use of natural cement made from limestone found solely in Rosendale, NY. The most prominent structures in New York, including the Brooklyn Bridge’s gargantuan caissons, the Statue of Liberty’s 27,000-ton pedestal, and the Empire State Building itself, derive their strength from Rosendale stone. In 1970, the final closure of the Rosendale limestone mine occurred. The owner, A.J. Snyder, who was as resilient as the material he quarried, gained notoriety as a strict boss and husband. Conversely, his wife Jane, a beloved figure in the Rosendale community, stood out for her kindness and pure spirit. Consequently, upon Snyder’s passing, the Rosendale Limestone Mine became widely recognized as the Widow Jane Mine. This robust stone not only upholds a city but also contributes essential qualities to crafting exceptional whiskey. While Kentucky is renowned for being the hub of American whiskey production due to its limestone-filtered water and mineral content, Rosendale Limestone boasts an even greater ratio of beneficial minerals, accompanied by pure sparkling waters akin to its namesake, the Widow Jane. The owner of Widow Jane Distilling, who grew up savoring the pristine waters of the Widow Jane Mine, employs these unique waters to distill artisan spirits in Red Hook, Brooklyn. Widow Jane Whiskey truly encapsulates the essence of New York City, echoing the rock that underpins its skyscrapers and embracing the innovative, DIY spirit that has established Brooklyn as the nucleus of a new artisanal food and beverage movement.

Once distilled, rye emerges as sweet, grassy, and floral. The traditional “spicy” trait arises during barrel aging. Widow Jane Rye Mash American Oak Aged Whiskey seeks to gently age the rye distillate in our 7-year bourbon barrels, enriched with fresh oak and applewood staves. This offers a light, tropical “summer” rye, ideal for crafting delightful cocktails. Adding a touch of bitters or a splash of vermouth or ginger beer can elevate its flavor.
