Sangiovese is a red wine grape varietal that is most common to central Italy, Campania and Sicily. It thrives in soils with high concentration of limestone, and rather cool climate, and has a long growing season. These grapes are high in acidity, and have a very light body, so they are quite often blended with other grape varietals, most famously in Chianti, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, and Super Tuscan wines. There are at least sixteen known clones of Sangiovese that exist today, Brunello being one of the most regarded. Sangiovese is predominately grown in Italy, but it is becoming more popular in other wine making countries, such as Argentina, Romania, France and USA. It is a very food friendly wine, and pairs well with Italian cuisine, roast chicken, grilled and smoked meats.
